How French works
Chapter 48:

Using de with le, la and les

Key points

Like à, the preposition de is often used the le, la or les. This can also lead to a change of form:

When de is used with le, it changes to du:

Ils ont parlé du match

They talked about the match

Note

It is important to remember that du, de la and des can also be used as partitive articles. In this case they do not mean of the but some or any:

Tu veux du chocolat?

Do you want some chocolate?

When de is used with les, it changes to des:

Elle a pris une photo des enfants

She took a photo of the children

When de is used with la it is unchanged:

Elle sort de la maison

She goes out of the house
