How French works
Chapter 60:

Superlative adjectives

Key points

The superlative is the form of an adjective you use when you want to say that something is the biggest, smallest, longest etc. of a number of things.

In English it is often formed by putting –est on the end of the adjective or by putting most / least before it. For example, in the sentence He’s the youngest person in the class, the word youngest is a superlative adjective.

In French superlative adjectives are formed using le, la, or les with plus or moins:

C’est la plus jeune personne dans la classe

He’s / She's the youngest person in the class

La voiture rouge est la moins chère

The red car is the cheapest

Note

Note that the adjective bon (good) has the irregular form le meilleur (best):

Mes notes étaient bonnes mais les notes de Martha étaient les meilleurs

My marks were good but Martha's marks were the best
