The conditional
1 Formation
1.1 Regular verbs
For all verbs the conditional is formed by taking the future
stem
and adding the following
endings -ais, ais, -ait,
-ions, -iez, -aient.

Le ministre a déclaré qu'il réfléchirait à la proposition soumise par les syndicats.
The minister declared that he would consider the proposal presented by the unions.
L’ordinateur marcherait certainement mieux si tu le branchais.
The computer would certainly work better if you plugged it in.
Cela m’ intéresserait de visiter le musée Marmottan.
It would interest me to visit the Marmottan museum.
Nous agrandirions bien la maison mais nous n’avons pas assez d’argent.
We’d extend the house but we don’t have the money.
Il a promis qu'il leur téléphonerait dès son arrivée.
He promised he would phone them as soon as he arrived.
1.2 Semi-irregular verbs
Formation is the same for semi-irregular verbs:

Selon les journaux il renouvellerait son offre d’achat dans quelques semaines.
According to the papers he'll renew his takeover bid in a few weeks.
Si tu prenais le train je t’ emmènerais à la gare.
If you were going by train I’d take you to the station.
Nous rachèterions bien la maison d’en face mais elle est trop chère.
We would buy the house across the road but it’s too expensive.
Si j’étais riche j’ achèterais une maison à la campagne.
If I were rich I’d buy a house in the country.
Il voulait lui offrir un cadeau dont elle se rappellerait toujours.
He wanted to give her a present she’d remember for ever.
1.3 Irregular verbs
Irregular verbs are formed in the same manner as regular and semi-irregular verbs:

Il ne ferait rien qui nuirait à la réputation sa famille.
He wouldn’t do anything that would harm the reputation of his family.
Je peindrais bien la palissade aujourd’hui mais j’ai peur qu’il pleuve.
I’d paint the fence today but I’m worried it will rain.
Si nous allions plus vite nous pourrions finir avant vendredi.
If we went more quickly we could finish by Friday.
Je le reconnaîtrais dans la rue si je le voyais.
I’d recognize him in the street if I saw him.
Selon le rapport une autoroute créerait d’importantes nuisances sonores.
According to the report a motorway would create significant noise pollution.
2 Use of the conditional
The conditional is used in the following contexts:
2.1 Expressing wish, need
When expressing a wish or need:
Ce serait bien agréable d'aller
à la plage aujourd'hui
It would be really nice to go to the beach today
2.2 Sentences containing si
In a sentence containing si:
Je viendrais avec vous si je
n'étais pas si fatigué
I would come with you if I wasn't so tired
2.3 Polite requests
For making polite requests or suggestions:
Pourriez-vous m'aider, je cherche
l'Hotel de Ville?
Could you help me, I'm looking for the Town Hall
2.4 After au cas où
Je prendrai un pullover au cas où le temps se refroidirait
I'll take a jumper in case it gets colder
2.5 In the conditional perfect
Si tu me l'avais dit plus tôt, je serais venu t'aider
If you had told me sooner, I would have come and helped you
Nous aurions aimé avoir eu un entretien avec le directeur.
We’d have liked to have had an interview with the managing director.
D’après le directeur les bénéfices auraient diminué.
According to the managing director profits have gone down.
Si nous avions su qu’il y aurait tant de monde nous serions partis plus tôt.
If we’d known there’d be so many people we’d have left earlier.
En coupant à travers champs nous aurions gagné une demi-heure.
If we’d cut across country we’d have saved half an hour.
D’après le journal télévisé on aurait retrouvé les tableaux.
According to the television news the paintings have been found.
