Depuis / pendant 1 Depuis 1.1 Present time In English, when we say we've been doing something for a period of time,
or since a specific time or date, we use a past tense :
I have been studying in Manchester
since September 2000
We've lived / been
living in this house for ten years
To say the same thing in French, the
present tense
is
used. To say you've been doing something since a certain time (as in the
first sentence above), use depuis :
Je fais mes études à Manchester

Il fait beau depuis le début du mois de juillet.
The weather’s been good since the beginning of July.
Elle vit ici depuis la mort de son mari.

Nous attendons ici depuis midi.
We’ve been waiting here since midday.
To say you've been doing something for a particular amount of time (as
in the second sentence above), also use depuis :

In spoken language you can also use ça fait ... que , but note the difference in word order:

1.2 Past time There is a similar tense difference between French and English when referring to actions taking place in the past:
Je faisais mes études à Manchester depuis septembre 1966
I had been studying in Manchester since September 1966
Nous louions cette maison depuis cinq ans quand le propriétaire a décidé de la vendre.
We’d been renting this house for five years when the landlord decided to sell it.
Depuis combien de temps est-ce que vous attendiez le bus quand vous êtes rentré chez vous?
How long had you been waiting for the bus before you went back home?
J’attendais depuis deux heures quand je le vis.
I had been waiting for two hours when I saw him.
Il était ministre depuis trois mois quand il a dû démissionner.
He’s been a minister for three months when he had to resign.
Nous jouions depuis dix minutes quand il a commencé à pleuvoir.
We had been playing for ten minutes when it started to rain.
1.3 Tense rules in negativeThese
tense
rules do not apply where a
negative
is involved. Instead
the tenses used are the same as in English:

Il n’a rien mangé depuis hier soir.
He hasn’t eaten anything since last night.

I haven’t been back to the restaurant since the last time we went there.
Nous ne sommes pas retournés en Espagne depuis 1990.
We haven’t been back to Spain since 1990.
Je ne suis pas allé les voir depuis Noël.
I haven’t been to see them since Christmas.
However, note the differences where ça fait is used to mean it's been :
It's been + [time period]
+ since + affirmative verb
is translated into French by the
construction:
Ça fait + [time period] + que + negative
verb
It's been a year since I've been to

2 Pendant 2.1 Tense rules
When you wish to say in French that you did something for a period of
time and that you're not doing it any more, use pendant . The
tense
used is the same as in English.
J'ai fait mes études à Manchester pendant

Elle a été premier ministre pendant onze ans.
She was prime minister for eleven years.
Elle a travaillé comme intérimaire pendant six mois avant de trouver un emploi à temps complet.
She worked for six months as a temp before finding a full-time job.
Il a dormi pendant trois heures cet après-midi.
He slept for three hours this afternoon.
Il a été maire de la ville pendant seize ans.
He was the town’s Mayor for sixteen years.
Hugo a vécu dans les îles Anglo-Normandes pendant cette période.
Hugo lived in the Channel Islands during this time.
2.2 Using pour
Pour is generally used instead of pendant when expressing
a proposed duration in the future:
Je vais à Manchester pour une

3 Depuis que / pendant que Generally depuis que and pendant que follow the same tense patterns as depuis and pendant :
Il est devenu beaucoup plus indépendant depuis qu' il est étudiant

Since I’ve been taking the train, I feel a lot happier.

I’ve been doing oil painting since I’ve been retired.
Il se sent beaucoup mieux depuis qu’il fait ses exercises.
He’s feeling much better since he’s been doing his exercises.
